Antinori nel Chianti Classico recently won the award as the world’s best winery at the “World’s Best Vineyards 2022”; an absolute triumph that also bears the signature of the SVC Winery Project, which supported the realisation and design of this magnificent and much-visited winery.
The architecture of this wine cellar has not altered the topographical course of the landscape, it is a completely underground project with great expressive tension in which natural materials found on site such as terracotta, wood and corten were used.
The structure is the result of seven years of work and was designed with the intention of combining productive functionality and aesthetic beauty.
Its impressiveness is concealed through the construction of a vineyard roof characterised by two horizontal cuts that allow light to enter.
The large underground barriques, in which the wine completes its slow maturation process, fit perfectly into the natural folds of a landscape that has not been altered, but renewed.
The earth insulates and thermally protects the technical and ageing areas, regaining its value and centrality; a new dimension of work is thus created in which the slopes facilitate the handling of the product.
The use of sustainable processes that exploit gravity for the passage of the grapes from the harvest hoppers to the fermentation vats makes this jewel in the Chianti region a perfect marriage of nature and factory.
The hand-picked grapes, thanks to a vibrating hopper, are conveyed into the destemmer-crusher without the aid of mechanical components to preserve the integrity of the fruit; the must then, together with the skins, passes through a steel conduit and into the tanks in which the vinification process takes place at a controlled temperature.
The particular production facilities of this cellar allow a fusion of innovation, technology and tradition, enabling the creation of high quality wines.
